Sea Defence Wall Repair

TONE Scaffolding Services were challenged by our client to design by calculation and erect a suspended scaffold to the sea defence wall for repair works. The scaffolding was “decked” using bespoke fabricated open mesh gratings, fixed onto the scaffolding, to allow water to flow through the scaffolding and to prevent “uplift” forces by the high tides and the wash of passing boat traffic.

Support scaffolding was erected on the land side of the sea wall, each 1.80m bay of scaffolding was weighted with two number one tonne kentledge blocks, to prevent uplift. From the support scaffolding, cantilevered beams were erected over the sea wall, from which a suspended scaffolding was erected, as the scaffolding could not be founded on the sea bed.

An emergency escape area had to be incorporated to allow an injured person, working on the scaffolding, to be raised in a stretcher to the top level, where double gates are located.
